Fietsketting

Was universeel (zie foto).

Groeten,
Roeland.

  1. What you’re looking for is a heavy-duty chain with bushings. As far as I know, all bicycle chains manufactured until 1980s had bushings; later on, they decided to cut costs and make bushingless chains. They are lighter (and better for sporting bikes), but not as durable.

Stay away from chains that costs 5 euro or so, like KMC Z1 etc. Buy it cheap and buy it twice. They tend to wear out a lot, and the chain will get significantly longer after time; this is especially the case with transportfietsen or other heavy-duty bikes. As for me, I’ve ridden the said Z1, Shimano Nexus and SRAM PC-1 (nickel-plated), as well as some other chains. Every few months I had to adjust the tensioning. I’m going to buy and test the Wippermann Connex 1R8 for my transportfiets; they advertise it as a heavy-duty chain (although the distributors market it towards the BMX crowd) and I’d like to test its reliability over time.

The old Perry will be okay if you’ve got a standard width chainring and cog (i.e. 1/8″). Brampton, Sachs-Sedis or Wippermann are good choices too. Just watch out for chain width… Some bikes, and especially bakfietsen, had wide chains (3/16″ or even 1/4″) and you won’t get them as easily. In this case you may look for a moped or motorcycle chain.

    1. Thanks, Christophe.
I found the right chain when I visiting Toon Mensinck in Oirschot. It’s the Perry on the photo below. This one fits perfect and I’m already cycling again with lots of loads and cargo.

    2. You DO know that there should be NO tension on the chain, yes?
Chain should be between just no tension anywhere when running and just not falling of the bike. Tension on the chain makes the chain, cogs and bearings wear out. Don’t exactly know why they are called ’tensioners’.
