Simplex transportfiets in Canada

Hallo,

I live in Canada, from Dutch parents so I understand, read, and speak Dutch, but ik fint het moejlijk om het te schriven(!) so feel free to respond in Dutch.
I just bought a Simplex bike for 35$ here in Ontario… The front rack is still at the mans house, but the rest is here. Does anyone know anything about it? The man I bought it from knew it was from Europe, but that was all. It is a nice large frame, which suits me, and rides very well. I plan on doing a lot of work to it this coming Canadian winter, as I know I won’t be riding it for 6 months at least!
Did it originally come with a chain guard? I assume the handle grips are not original? The original seat was screwed as low as possible to the frame, in an attempt to make it for ridable for a smaller rider. Its lying in my box of moped parts in the background of the photo.
Anything anyone could tell me about it would be helpful.
Dank u wel,

Adriaan Geluk

  1. Hallo Adriaan
It seems to me it ,s a tour model ,a high model for tall men the double tube is for the extra strenght.
It,s old all right mabe you could read the make year in the rear hub.
Also you could look at the tire size is it 28 1 3/4 or 28 1 1/2.
The fenders are tour model as well .

  4. Thanks Everyone who has left comments,
I do know more about this bike now, it seems it is from somewhere between ’45 and ’54 and like you said, a touring model reinforced because of the taller frame.
I have to look up a few words like ‘geschiedenis’. I do want to buy some mooie oude handvatten en ook, an oude kettingkast, en verder, ooppoetzen and maybe find an original lepper aluminum rear wheel… oh, and a lamp..
Where can I buy these things, used would be better….

Do you usually buy new spokes when restoring a wheel, or remove them and have them chromed? The hubs are in excellent shape, but the spokes of course have suffered in the last 50+ years.
Other than that its a good cruiser, I take my girlfriend and her puppy on the back for cruise around town and love it. They sit on the back rack, as I learned the Dutch do on my many trips to holland!
Will work on it this winter, when biking is impossible, though I’m also restoring a triumph spitfire (’71) so we’ll see how much time I have. The bike is the more tempting option right now!

    Thanks again allemal, take care,
    Groeten uit Canada!

  5. Just re read that last comment which said ‘van voor de 2e wereld oorlog’, so now I’m confused as I thought it was from after. Hard to say. I will keep looking for more information and parts,.. from between 1930 and 1954… Thanks again!
